RN Refresher

COVID-19 Update

We are working to ensure the RN Refresher Course can be a tool to help you get back into nursing during this time of extraordinary need.  The didactic portion of the course remains live and we are taking steps to provide the final exam remotely. Due to a state wide Stay at Home order, the clinical rotation of the course can't be completed at this time. Any student who enrolls during this time will not be subject to the normal time restrictions for the clinical portion. This doesn't mean you can't get to work, though!

Nurses with expired licenses in good standing may volunteer by following very specific requirements. Please follow the LINK [https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/CODORA/bulletins/283025c] to the press release from the CO Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA).

We are here to answer any questions you may have, please reach out at training@centralcoahec.org or call the professional education team at 720-446-8319.

Central Colorado AHEC is a State leader in online RN Refresher education!

  • The RN Refresher course is based on and approved by the Colorado State Board of Nursing requirements for a non-traditional program.
  • Course is divided into modules and is self-paced, allowing you to set a schedule that works for you. You have a full year to complete the course!
  • Phase I includes didactic material and the Evolve HESI RN Patient Reviews that provide refresher students with “pre-hospital” practice scenarios.
  • Modules include additional learning activities and resources to complement the theory content.
  • Phase II comprises the clinical – program staff can assist you in finding a clinical site near you- no need to travel to downtown Denver. The preceptored clinical is comprised of 80-120 hours of practice in the actual hospital setting (depending on how long you have been out of practice).

Course Overview

You will have 12 months from when you received your logins to finish the didactic part of the course.

Online Programs Used:

  • Moodle: The course is designed using case-based learning where actual case scenarios are used to develop critical thinking in the learner. There are four theoretical modules that can be accessed online (you will be provided login information and instructions).
  • Evolve: The Evolve Website will be used as a tool to teach various scenarios. These include critical thinking exercises in adult health (all systems), med-surg problems, procedures and treatment, mathematical practice, acid-base and electrolytes, infection control and wound care, and psychiatric fundamentals, procedures, disorders, and treatment.

Each module has assigned readings, case studies and self-testing. The student is expected to read the assignments, review the web links, and complete the self-tests.

Once you have completed the course requirements you will then be eligible to take the open book final exam at your local AHEC or a testing center near you. You are required to have an 80% passing grade for the final exam to continue on to the clinical portion. You may take the final exam only once. If you should not pass, you would need to retake the course at half tuition before taking the final again.

  • Module One - Current Concepts in Nursing Theory

Clinical Practicum

Module Five is 80-120 (depending on how long you have been out of nursing) hours of clinical practicum. Skills training and hospital required training utilizing self-assessment and a skills check list must be completed under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor. The clinical experience is individualized for the student based on their background, education and work environment. The experience is a contract between the student, healthcare facility, and assigned preceptor. This practicum is arranged by the student. An educator agreement between CCAHEC and the healthcare facility must be created before the experience begins. Also the State Board of Nursing (SBON) must assign a temporary nursing license for the practicum before beginning. The student must apply for a permanent license to the SBON at this time as well. The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) website has more information about these requirements.
