The first week of October had a buzz of excitement for the AmeriCorps State & National Program Staff. On October 2nd & 3rd we welcomed seven new Members to the Community Opioid Response Program (CORP). The members will be serving in: Jefferson & Boulder Counties, Denver Metro & Tri-County area, El Paso County, Pueblo County, Alamosa County, Mesa County, and Weld County. During their orientation, the Members learned about AmeriCorps, got an overview of opioid misuse in Colorado, met key state partners, and enjoyed some team building. On the 4th & 5th our seven S&N Members were joined by the three CORP VISTAs, VISTA Coordinator, and 200+ S&N Members from other programs at Serve Colorado’s Annual Member Retreat.
At the retreat our Members had the opportunity to connect with other Members serving in their region, learn from AmeriCorps Alumni and Second Year Members, and help coordinate a Naloxone Education Panel. With the assistance of Susanna Cooper, of the Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention, 143 AmeriCorps Members and Staff were trained in reverse opioid related overdoses using Naloxone. This panel was a great learning opportunity for our S&N Members, as they will be delivering the same presentation to their respective communities. The Members reported to their service sites on Monday the 8th.
